Quotation by Hans Weinsheimer, 1944

Visiting Cologne’s former Gestapo headquarters (now a museum) inspired this work; its inscriptions scratched onto the walls of cells by political and other opponents of the Nazi regime. In the basement of what looks like an ordinary business building, thousands of prisoners were deported to death camps, or executed in its courtyard. The text shown in this painting, by Hans Weinsheimer in 1944 - one of dozens of poignant messages found there. Equally haunting is the labyrinth of tiny, institutionally painted, grey prison cells. Even now one can ‘hear’ the pleas for mercy and help.
