Inscriptions
This work was commissioned to commemorate the life-long wanderings of a woman who died recently. Her journey started in Piestany, Slovakia, in 1939. As WWII began her ‘journey’ was an escape to Vienna, and then onwards to Canada, where during her adult life she lived in many different places across Canada. She died in Victoria, British Columbia. Jean always remembered, as a young person, climbing to the top of a hill in Vienna to see if she could see her hometown of Piestany, which she thought she would never see again. This anecdote informed the central idea of this painting.
