This painting in one of series incorporating the text from the 13th century Catholic hymn to Mary, which portrays her suffering as a mother of Christ during his crucifixion. Many composers, such as: Palestrina, Pergolesi, Haydn, Rossini, Pärt, etc. have set the text to music. The aim of the painting is to highlight parts of this ancient Latin text, to convey the universality of its message of grief; it’s relevance to mothers anywhere and any time, for the loss of their children, such as in the civil war in Syria.
