Chichester Psalms
Acrylic on modular wood panels
28h x 44w inches
2015

This painting was inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Chichester Psalms’. In Bernstein’s music, the second movement begins and ends with calm, pastoral vocal music (Psalm 23), but is quickly disturbed, midway, by aggressive, intersecting text (Psalm 2) in the centre of the panels.

Psalm 23
‘The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake. Etc…..

Psalm 2
‘Why do the nations rage,
And the people imagine a vain thing?’
The kings of the earth set themselves,
And against the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord, and His anointed. Etc………
