Inscriptions
This acrylic painting was inspired by the choral music with the same title, by the late English composer John Tavener. The music was played at Princess Diana’s funeral, and has subsequently received much fame, because of its text, which blends words from the Bible and Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. My interpretation attempts to animate the text, emphasizing the lines: ‘May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest’, and ‘Weeping at the grave creates the song: Alleluia’. The word weeping is repeated as if it were tears running down the canvas, towards the bottom line of the lettering.
