This acrylic painting is a response to a quotation by French novelist Gabriel Chevallier (1895-1969), from his novel ‘Fear’ (‘La Peur’) that deals with the horrors in the trenches during the First World War. Besides its connection to savagery to that conflict, I also felt that these words fitted the horrors of Auschwitz and other mistreatment of Jews during the Holocaust.

English Translation:
‘It felt as if we had come to some place in the world which was part of a dream, that had gone beyond the limits of reality and hope’.
