The Polish text for this work was inspired by the scratched plea by teenager Helena Wanda, on the walls of her concentration camp cell, in Zakopana, Poland, in 1944. Polish composer Henri Gorecki, set the same text to music, in his ‘Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.
